Structural optimisation is a process which enables engineers to make the most efficient use of the available material when designing a part. This can be done by creating structures that are as lightweight as possible whilst continuing to support the stresses that the part will be under. Optimisation methods such as topology, and free shape optimisation have been available for over 20 years within the tools developed by Vanderplaats R&D, and are becoming ever more popular as methods being utilised during the design process. 

In many cases the analysis part of the 

optimisation is based on the Finite

Element Analysis (FEA) method for static, 

normal modes. Additionally, VR&D's tools 

can consider frequency analysis, random

response analysis, heat transfer, and system

buckling calculations.
