OED2018 Speaker Spotlight – Andrew Morris

Lightweight Cylinder Block and Lubricant Circuit Thermal Management Solutions for Low CO2 Emissions

GRM was tasked to assist Ricardo and some other companies in the Latitude project, a UK Advancement Centre funded project.  The two objectives set are to produce a high powered, thermally optimised engine, building on the VIPER programme and producing a low powered "ECO" engine with a lightweight cylinder block cranktrain.  The reduction of engine mass has increasingly important significance, due to the reduction of CO2 emission targets, as does faster engine warm up and a lower inertia block.  GRM assisted with thermal modelling and mass optimisation of the cylinder block, which is synergistic with other thermal technologies.

"Ricardo are a global, multi-industry, multi-disciplined consultancy and niche manufacturer of high-performance products. We can produce small design projects or we can take a whole engine from concept into production in low volume."
