Complex Flow Problems: An Application of Empirical Design, CFD, Test and Optimisation Methods

In the Motor Club Sport 750 Special Series, conventional CFD and wind-tunnel work suffer from major limitations in quantifying behaviour of a race car in cornering conditions. So, where budgets and regulations allow, teams resort to considerable on-track development. It was GRM’s intention to perform transient analyses using linked CFD and dynamic FEA to simulate a transient flow event.

“Development tends to follow an evolutionary approach. In this example of a racing sports car, it was desired to add a diffuser and spoiler, according to new regulations. GRM applied CFD and a variety of optimisation methods, achieving a major step forward in time for the start of the race season.”
